Presenteeism is just as problematic, if not more, than absenteeism in a workplace. It is defined as a loss of productivity when, despite being present at work, an employee does not work at their best due to injury or illness. People who show signs of presenteeism are usually afraid of losing their job or income and will force themselves to be "present" at work.
There are a variety of reasons why presenteeism occurs. These can include:
All of these factors contribute to not only unwell and unhappy employees but also to an unsuccessful workplace. When workplaces effectively implement employee wellbeing programs, presenteeism can be combated. Employees will feel more engaged and their work performance will increase as a result. It can also address the more fundamental reasons why presenteeism exists such as work-related stress and illnesses.
If you or someone you know is feeling unwell, whether it is physically, mentally or emotionally, it is important that you seek help to address the issues. Talk to your employer, a counsellor or PPC Worldwide to support you through any cases of presenteeism. Seeking help early will not only benefit your wellbeing but will also improve your performance and quality of life.
